useo ICO, art and architecture with “Sáenz de Oíza. Arts and crafts” on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza (Cáseda, Navarra, October 12, 1918 – Madrid, July 18, 2000).

Five spaces that recreate five trades and that bring together figures of our culture that integrate Architecture, Painting and Sculpture.

THE TRADE OF LEARNING / THE ART OF TEACHING

The teaching profession: the task of learning and teaching. A loft where objects are mixed that take us to the origins of Oíza in her hometown Casida, readings that marked her personal world and her architectural work, technology that she discovered in her adventure in the United States together with the extraordinary manual ability she possessed. Learn to later teach at the University where he was professor and director of the School of Architecture.

From that time were the constructions of the Batán Schools in Madrid (along with Sierra and Romaní), the Faculty of Sciences in Córdoba and the Public University of Navarra.

Learn by projecting, learn by building, learn by teaching.

THE OFFICE OF LIVING / THE ART OF BUILDING

The House as the foundation of man’s life. Intimate spaces where the inner world of those who inhabit it is enhanced.

As single-family homes are in this space that of Lucas Prieto (Talavera de la Reina, 1960), that of Arturo Echevarría in the La Florida urbanization (Madrid, 1972) and Villa Fabriciano in Torrelodones (Madrid, 1987).

In the 1950s, Oíza also designed collective housing such as the social housing in the Batán and El Ruedo neighborhoods.

THE OFFICE OF THE SOUL / THE ART OF EVOCATING

The spiritual office. Art and architecture, integrating space for the Arts. Sculpture, architecture and painting converge to create the Basilica of Aránzazu in Oñate (Guipúzcoa). Eduardo Chillida, Jorge Oteiza, Lucio Muñoz and Sáenz de Oíza; a conjunction of young painters, sculptors and architects, later icons of our 20th century art.

THE OFFICE OF BELIEVING / THE ART OF PATRONAGE

Years 60 and 70, stage of creative explosion of Oíza. Artists and friends like Palazuelo, Oteiza, Sistiaga … work together and receive the nickname of the patron Juan Huarte, the job of believing and defending the best in town.

Las Torres Blancas, one of the most emblematic works of the architect is from this time.

THE TRADE OF COMPETITION / THE ART OF REPRESENTING

The office of imagining. Competitions to which it was presented in restricted or open calls. The Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno CAAM (Las Palmas, 1985) and the Santander Festival Palace are some of the projects that Oíza carried out for public competitions.

Art and architecture, Sáenz de Oíza

Throughout the exhibition, the link between architecture and other artistic disciplines is appreciated. Projects with leading creators of the time: Pablo Palazuelo, Jorge Oteiza, José Antonio Sistiaga, Antonio López, Lucio Muñoz, Eduardo Chillida … A tribute to creativity.
